SYNTHESIS OF SOME AMPHIPHILIC BLOCK COPOLYMERS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS IN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY COATINGS

Aliphatic polyesters were prepared by the reaction of adipic / succinic acid and ethylene glycol (EG) by polycondensation reaction. The prepared polyethylene adipate (PEA) and polyethylene succinate (PES) were modified by mono ethanolamine to form polyesteramides polyethylene adipate amide (PEAA) and polyethylene succinate amide (PESA). The aliphatic polyesters (PEA) and (PES), polyesteramides (PEAA) and (PESA) were characterized using FTIR, 1H NMR, thermal analysis (DSC and TGA) and GPC.Series of amphiphilic block copolymers Polyethylene adipate -b- polyethylene glycol (PEA-b-PEG)s and Polyethylene succinate -b- polyethylene glycol (PES-b-PEG)s were also prepared by meltpolycondensation reaction by reacting adipic/succinic acid with ethylene glycol (EG) and Polyethylene glycol (PEG) with different molecular weight (300 up to 20000 g/mol). The prepared amphiphilic block copolymers were characterized using FTIR, 1H NMR, thermal analysis (DSC and TGA) and GPC.The prepared polyesteramides (PEAA and PESA) were evaluated as corrosion inhibitors and compared with their homo analogous polyesters (PEA and PES) in coating formulations based on medium oil alkyd resin. Chemical, Physical and mechanical properties of the prepared coating formulations were measured. Corrosion tests were determined in addition to surface analysis of the steel surface by SEM. On the other hand the prepared amphiphilic block copolymers (PEA-b-PEG)s were applied as plasticizers in different rotogravure ink formulations. First the performance of (PEA-b-PEG)s as plasticizers for neat nitrocellulose resin was studied. The mechanical properties, thermal analysis (DSC and TGA) and optical properties of the preparedplasticized nitrocellulose films were investigated. Then different rotogravure ink formulations were prepared in presence of (PEA-b-PEG)s and their effect as plasticizer compared with acetyl tributyl acetate (ATBC) as commercial plasticizers in blank ink formula. The color measurements and optical properties to the all ink formulations were achieved.It was found that the synthesized polyesteramides PEAA and PESA can inhibit the corrosion of the steel in 3.5% NaCl solution on the basis of their adsorption on the surface of the steel. The adsorption ability of these polymers depends mainly on their electro negativity of the active function groups and the protection power increases with the increase the concentration of PEAA and PESA. The prepared copolymers )PEA-b-PEG(s gave excellent plasticizing effect due to increasing the flexibility by softening the chemical bonds of the nitrocellulose and the cyclohexanone formaldhyde resins.
