Study of gene expression in stem cells differentiated into endometriotic cells
Endometriosis is defined by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. It mainly evolve in the ovaries, Douglas Pouch and utero-sacral ligaments and peritoneal cavity. This disease often results in extensive morbidity, including chronic pelvic pain and infertility. On examination, finding pelvic tenderness, a fixed retroverted uterus, tender uterosacral ligaments or enlarged ovaries is suggestive of endometriosis (Olive and Pritts, 2001; Giudice, 2010). Despite recent progress in diagnosis of this disease, the mainstay of diagnosis is still the direct visualization of the lesions by invasive surgery through laparoscopy or laparotomy. Then the visual diagnosis preferably is to be followed by histological confirmation of at least one lesion (Kennedy et al., 2005; Del Frate et al., 2006; Busacca and Vignali, 2009)
