Bvaluation of serum vitamin D and rron Levels in Uncontrolled Childhood Asthma
Asthma is a problem worldwide, with an estimated 300 million affected individuals all over the world, it appears that the global prevalence of asthma ranges from l7o -18% of the population in different countries. The world health organization has estimated that L5 million disabilityadjusted life years (DALYs) are lost annually due to asthma, representing L%o of the total global disease burden. Annual worldwide deaths from asthma'have been estimated at 250,000 and mortality does not appear to correlate well with prevalence. It is thought that micronutrients influence tbe immune system and may play a major role in the development of asthma and in the progression of other allergic diseases. However, only few of these studies have used objectively measured variables to evaluate the relationships between nutrition and respiratory diseases. Therefor the search for causes of the increasing prevalence of asthma among children, especially in developing countries, may be linked to dietary factors.
