STUDY OF THE PRODUCTION AND ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY FOR THE MOST IMPORTANT VEGETABLE CROPS IN GIZA GOVERNORATE
Economic efficiency, Step-wise Regression, Efficiency measures, Production functions, Cost functions
The study of the production and economic efficiency is particularly important in the agricultural sector, as the basic agricultural resources are limited. The problem of the study is represented in the fluctuation of cultivated area of vegetables in Egypt and Giza Governorate. The problem also extends to the productivity decline and the inefficiency of the production economic efficiency of the crops investigated. In order to achieve the objectives, the study, adopted some descriptive and quantitative statistical methods, and multiple step-wise regression analysis was used. The results of the study showed that added units of nitrogen fertilizer and the elements of human labor are affecting the production of tomatoes and potatoes crops in Giza Governorate, and the study showed that there is over needed used of pesticides in tomatoes and potatoes production. It was also found that the most important elements affecting the production of onions crop are the elements of manure, added units of nitrogen fertilizer, and human labor. The maximum value of economic efficiency for production elements with human labor reached about 80%, whereas reached the minimum value with nitrogen fertilizer (<30%). Through costs function the study estimate the optimum size of production and the maximum profit production for sample categories of studied crops. From the study of measure the economic efficiency of the studied sample categories, it was shown that the economic efficiency is higher in the third category, as greater areas allow use of machinery and technological equipment, which reduce the use of human labor with a high cost, and large areas allow economics of scale, which reduces costs and explains the high value of the efficiency estimated for third category.
