Phytochemical and Biological Investigation of Justicia spicigera Family Acanthaceae
Justicia spicigera / Acanthaceae / anthocyanins
The presented thesis aimed at the discovery of the therapeutic agents derived from Justicia spicigera Schltdl.(Family: Acanthaceae) by performing an applied phytochemical study including extraction, isolation and identification of its chemical constituents. We are looking forward to reach safe and effective therapeutic agents from botanical origin which can be useful in drug industry. This work mainly dealt with phytochemical study including an investigation of J. spicigera Schltdl. aerial parts starting with extraction, successive fractionation, phytochemical screening, determination of pharmacopoeial constants and quantitative estimation of total anthocyanins content. In addition, different investigations were carried out including saponins, carbohydrates and total phenolic content. HPLC analysis of amino acids content and GC/MS analysis of volatile constituents were also performed. GC/MS analysis of pet. ether fraction, HPLC characterization and identification of the anthocyanins content of the ethyl acetate fraction and also HPLC characterization & identification of the flavonoidal content of both ethyl acetate and butanol fractions was done. Moreover, isolation and identification of chemical compounds from petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions. Biological studies done included in vitro biological of radical scavenging, cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities. In vivo studies dealt with evaluation of hepatoprotective, antifibrotic and antibilharzial activities of J. spicigera Schltdl.
