STUDYING THE COUPLED EFFECT OF USING NANO SILICA AND STEEL FIBERS ON FRESH AND HARDENED CONCRETE PROPERTIES
NANO SILICA / STEEL FIBERS / CONCRETE
In last decade, many researchers were concerned about improving concrete properties by applying different kinds of micro and nanoparticles. Nanoparticles can lead to improving the nanostructure of building materials such as cement paste and concrete. The use of nanoparticles enhances the micro-structure of concrete by filling the harmful pores and densifying the microstructure of cement paste. Nano silica (NS) considered as a common pozzolanic material due to its amorphous shape, many studies have been carried out to evaluate effect of using NS on physical, mechanical properties and durability of concrete. Also several studies have targeted the effect of using steel fibers (SF) to evaluate the mechanical properties of concrete. Steel fibers are very strong under tension or bending-induced tension; hence many researchers interested in using steel fibers in concrete to ensure greatly enhance on mechanical properties, but the durability of concrete is not gain the same improvement. In this thesis, experimental works was conducted to investigate the combined effect of using nano silica and steel fibers on mechanical properties and durability of concrete to perform concrete with the best characteristics. A total of twenty mixes were performed in the current study, Nano silica is used as partial cement replacement by 0, 1, 1.5, 2, and 4 wt%, and steel fiber is used as volume substitution by 0, 0.45, 0.9, and 1.35%.
