Intima media thickness as an early predictor of atherosclerosis in Egyptian children with Familial Mediterranean fever

Familial mediterranean fever is an auto-inflammatory disease that has an atherosclerotic burden due to the ongoing inflammation during and inbetween the attacks causing a structural change in the arteries. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether the carotid intima media thickness can be used as a predictor of atherosclerosis in patients with FMF. The study included 45 children diagnosed with FMF, recruited from pediatric rheumatology clinic, Cairo university and 45 healthy children as controls. The mean age of patients was 11.74±2.58 years, mean age at time of first symptoms was 5.82 ±2.52 years. Positive consanguinity of parents was found in (31.1%),positive family history of FMF in 13 patients (28.9%).
