Hydrogeochemical Studies on the Water Resources and Soil Characteristics in the Western Bank of the River Nile between Abu Qurqas and Dayr Mawas, El Minya Governorate, Egypt
Hydro geochemistry, Pollution, Ground Water, Suface Water
Anthropogenic activities are the main source for heavy metals in the water resources and soils which cause many risks and threats for the human and livestock life. The study area locates in the southern part of El-Minya Governorate in the area between Dayer Mawas and Abu Qurqas districts in the western side of the River Nile. The study area consists of highly elevated western limestone plateau and the cultivated and reclaimed low lands. The stratigraphic succession contains rock units from Eocene to Quaternary and alluvial deposits. Water resources in the study area include surface water and groundwater sources. River Nile, canals and drains are the main surface water resources and the Quaternary aquifer is the groundwater resource. 55 water samples are collected for the present study, 30samples for the surface water and 25 samples for the groundwater. The water samples are evaluated geochemically for using in the different purposes. The results display that water pH ranges from neutral to medium alkaline. Salinity of the majority of surface water samples are very fresh water and fresh water in the groundwater samples
