Cytogenetic and histological studies on the effect of two fruit seed extracts against cyclophosphamide-induced toxicity in mice
Cyclophosphamide, chemotherapy, Prunus persica, peach, Citrus sinensis, sweet orange, seed extract, Methanolic extract, mice, micronucleus test, mitotic chromosomal aberration assay, liver histopathology, genotoxicity, cytotoxicity.
Cyclophosphamide (CP) is a frequently used drug for its anticancer and immunosuppressive potential. However metabolism of CP in the body results into toxic chemical compounds (that can cause damage to the liver itself and other non-target vital organs) via oxidative stress, apoptosis induction and/or necrosis. This study was designed to access the ability to alleviate the side-effects of CP by using Prunus persica (peach) and Citrus sinensis (sweet orange) methanolic seeds extracts, due to their nutritional value and therapeutic properties. Recently fruit waste reutilization gain a lot of interest to be used as a source ofbioactive compounds that may be used in multidisciplinary fields as medicine, pharmacology, food industry, cosmetics, and animal feed. Peach and orange seeds have bioactive constituents such as flavonoids, phenols and carotenoids. Methanolic extract is the most widely used since it offers a high recovery of antioxidant compounds.
